Just Another Stroll Through the Garden

Like kids would say…

“OMG!!!”

It’s August already & summer is zooming…

  • Back-to-School stuff flying off the shelves!
  • Sun’s setting earlier!
  • Football commercials on TV!
  • Halloween decorations appearing in Target!

It’s time to stop & smell the roses… again.

Take a deep breath…relax…& join me in the garden.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

I’m not an expert on William Shakespeare…

The-Shakespeare-Birthplace-Portrait-of-William-Shakespeare_3

but I’ve always been particularly confused by A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Language & humor along with fairies & fireflies weave an enchanting tale, but here’s the thing…

If summer officially starts on June 21st & ends around September 21st, then wouldn’t logic dictate that “mid” summer would occur sometime in early August. Do the math…roughly 90 days between the June & September dates…divided in half is 45 days…add 45 days to June 21st & you come up about now!!! So why is it that whenever you come across William’s play or any reference to it, Midsummer is considered to be June 21st or the summer solstice. Go figure.

Here’s another question that chases itself around my brain…

Theoretically, how close could you stand in a lake to a lightening bolt that struck the water & feel the buzz, but not get killed? That’s an awkward way to phrase the question, so if you have a clearer wording…send it along. Good thunderstorms are thrilling with slashing light & rumbling thunder. I don’t particularly have a death wish but would love to feel just the tiniest jolt from a bolt in the lake. I’ve consulted with my friends about this question & several scientists because I believe that somewhere out there lurks a mathematical formula that would provide guidelines for the answer. Again, any thoughts about this…send them along.

Next up on the list of Midsummer Night’s questions…

If you’re in a boat on the west side of the lake when the sun is setting, is it possible to speed to the east side & see the sunset again? If so, how fast would you have to travel?

Finally, the last big Midsummer Night’s questions…

Roasted Marshmallow

If I like marshmallows & you don’t, is it because the marshmallows taste different to you & I or is it because they taste exactly the same & you don’t appreciate their taste? The corollary question is: Do I have better taste if I like marshmallows?

If you have any good Midsummer Night’s questions let me know. They can be profound, poetic, pithy or practical. Remember what your third grade teacher always said, “There is no such thing as a bad question! Also, don’t let these questions get in the way of celebrating your own Midsummer Night’s Dreams.

Me…I’m off to consult with an expert!!!

Stargazing 101

If you didn’t happen to be outside the other night…

1013258_10152125104248289_1534558134_n

you missed quite a show!

This photo was taken by Kenneth Snyder over at Sleeping Bear Dunes & was posted on the Pure Michigan website. Check out either website for more night-time beauty. http://unifiedphoto.com/2012/04/sleeping-bear-dunes-gallery/ or kennethsnyder.com

I’m lucky enough to have a dog who always thinks it’s necessary to go out for one more trip down the street late at night. Many times I stumble along behind him wishing for my pillow & an extra few moments of sleep, but the other night I had to thank him because the stars were out in all their finery, including that creamy celestial highway known as the Milky Way.

That got me thinking about the upcoming meteors shower.

Here’s what you need to know…

  •      Technically called the Perseids meteor shower, it’s occurring now, but the peak is set to occur next Sunday & Monday night the 11th & 12th.
  •      It is so named because most of the activity seems to occur near the Perseus constellation.
  •      The space dust that generates the meteors comes along the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet which orbits our sun every 130 years.
  •      It’s that space dust that creates what we all think of as shooting stars.
  •      The Perseids meteor shower has been observed for about 2000 years.
  •      Most of the meteors are seen in the Northern Hemisphere. (yeah)!

Now the fun part…

First of all Perseus – he was a Greek demigod who rescued the beautiful Andromeda who had been chained to a rock. When she was attacked by a sea monster Perseus happened along & saved the day! He is also credited with slaying the Gorgon Medusa (think snakes writhing all over the Gorgon’s head), so hosting meteors seems right up his alley.

As far as finding the right place to look…here’s a link that is simple & useful…http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/228304-perseid-meteor-shower-peak-2013-when-to-watch-where-to-go/

And of course the details…

  • Best viewing times will be after midnight…the moon will have set & it will be really dark! That may necessitate a nap before hand for many of us but it could be worth it!
  • Wear something warm, soft, & cuddly – you will be sleepy after all & want the comfort. Take a blanket & pillow.
  • Carry along some creative snick-snacks. The biggest decision there will be salty or sweet.
  • Wear a patient hat…it takes awhile for your eyes to adjust to the dark & you may not see them as quickly as you like.
  • Whatever happens, enjoy the night sky & the fresh air…unless it rains.

Me…I’m off to wait for the sunset!!!
