Gourmet Kayaking

Think of your favorite mouth-watering, over the top, restaurant…

You know, the one with the menu that starts with zesty appetizers & ends with desserts just this side of heaven with entres in between that simply soothe your soul.

Kayaking around the Torch Lake area offers the same rich menu of choices as your favorite gourmet restaurant.

Appetizers…

You may want to start with something to wake up your kayaking taste buds & an early morning adventure could be just the thing. Clam, Elk, Skegemog, Torch, Bellaire, it doesn’t matter.  You can put in at any of the public accesses (or your own dock if you’re lucky enough to have one up here) & start your day with a short paddle into a warm summer sunrise.

Soups & Salads

If you’re in the mood for something light & tasty, check out the little rivers that connect our lakes. Grass River, Torch River, & Rapid River offer satisfying experiences without overdoing it. If you’re lucky, you may spot the turtles that pass as miniature signposts along the way…

Entres…

The best entres come with appealing sides & so do padding adventures. When you’re ready for the main course, pick a lake & a connecting river. Recommendations might include Lake Bellaire paired with The Grass River or Torch River followed by Lake Skegemog. Just check in with your kayaking appetite, your map, & the weather report, then make your choices accordingly.

Whole enchilada…

If you’re ready to tackle the “Super-size” meal paddle, you could re-create the Shorts to Shorts adventure this past spring. Hearty kayakers paddled from the Shorts Brew Pub in Bellaire to the Shorts Brewery in Elk Rapids. Yup, that means all the way through Lake Bellaire, down Grass River, through Clam Lake, past the Dockside & the southern end of Torch Lake, down Torch River, into Lake Skegemog, and finally, through Elk Lake to  Elk Rapids. This is a trip that is utterly guaranteed to satisfy any & all obsessive paddling hunger.

Dessert…

Every great meal ends with a fabulous dessert & so it is with kayaking. There is no better way to end your day than with a “dessert” cruise…

The Runners of Torch Lake

I am not a runner

Oh I know HOW to run, I have run in the past & I even break into a kind of slow jog now & then…but I am not a runner.

Once every year I wish I was.  The last Saturday of every July I wish I could get up early, put on a colorful pair of zippy running shoes 81948_VIZ_PNK_GRN_LG& wander up to the library in Alden to join the rest of the runners participating in the Alden Run.

Steve Kershner, one of the organizers, sums it up perfectly when he says “Where else in the world can you run in a race whose finish-line is in a Methodist Church Garage Sale?”

The Alden Run has been around for more than 25 years. Local legend holds that the first race was between friends…a good natured competition held on a fine summer’s day. It may or may not have involved adult beverages, betting, & cool t-shirts, depending on who you talk to.  It most certainly involved bragging rights!

There are still t-shirts. In fact, they’ve become collector’s items with some people boasting about having them all.  The design & color for each year’s  shirt is a closely held secret unveiled only on the morning of the race. I have it on good authority that this year’s t-shirt is outstanding, having been designed by a mystery local artist.

Now the Alden Run blends the old race with current technology. Runners compete in age brackets & are “chipped” for time. Computers do that work fast, efficiently, & more accurately than the old stop watches. Instead of the old “Ready, set, GO”, there is an official starter with a start gun. You can check out all the cool old shirts, obtain current race & registration information, & find the course maps for both 5K & 10K events at http://www.aldenrun.com.  You can also check out your results after the run.

Last year 630 of your friends, family members & neighbors participated in the Alden Run. This year you can join us. Download the registration form, fill it out & send it in with your money (one of the small changes from that first race).

Then on July 27th  just lace up your zippy shoes, don this year’s t-shirt, & you’re off!

Although many of the logistics have changed, the spirit of the run has not.

It’s all about community… everyone is invited…young, old, fast, slow, runner or walker, 5K or 10K-er.

It’s all about fun…warm-up stretches with your neighbors, munching a muffin to fuel up for the race, cooling down afterwards with an ice cream cone.

It’s all about Torch Lake…just another way to celebrate this place we love!

Me…I’m off to lace up my shoes.

Marshmallows 101

There comes a moment every spring…

You may be in the middle of a phone call or out working in the yard, when suddenly, inexplicably, the vision of a toasted marshmallow floats into your head. The memory of its gooey sweetness flits across your tongue & you know without a doubt that a night by the campfire is in your future.

We all know, summer nights are nothing without the occasional marshmallow…

& it used to be so easy. Marshmallows were those white, fat-tube shaped, sugary confections that could be eaten either white, raw & sticky or brown, hot & gooey. They came in clear plastic bags marked “Jet-Puffed” & you could pick them up in any grocery store.

The humble marshmallow has an interesting history. Ancient Egyptians used the root of the marshmallow plant as a treatment for sore throats. They are also credited with being the first to blend it with honey to sweeten the taste.

Do you think its possible the Mary Poppins song “A Spoonful of Honey Makes the Medicine Go Down” came from this idea?

During the 19th century, it was the French who tinkered with the medicinal recipe & turned it into the confection we know & love. Check out www.Wikipedia.org for the whole story.

But like many good old things, time has a way of enhancing the possibilities.

Enter the new age of marshmallows

Now you have almost unlimited choices. In addition to the clear plastic bag, there are designer marshmallows, artistic marshmallows, & even homemade marshmallows. A whole world of marshmallows out there waiting for you in every

Yes Virginia, those are ALL marshmallows in those pictures!

And if that’s not stressful enough, there are even marshmallows in different flavors as evidenced by the chocolate-pecan, coconut, & peppermint marshmallows below.

You not only have the choice to eat them raw or toasted, now you can choose to turn them into art projects…
