The Spring of Torch Lake

As my friends in the south would say…

“Praise the Lord & pass the biscuits!”

It may not LOOK like spring or FEEL like spring,

although I did spring forward & I have done some spring cleaning.

I’m not wearing my spring clothes & I don’t yet have a spring in my step,

But…

At least tomorrow – March 20th – at 12:57 pm –

I can officially SAY…

The Lady of Torch Lake – An Irish Tale

I’ve not yet been to Ireland…

but I’m told it’s a lovely place that “fair shimmers with green”, a passionate place filled with music both lively & sad & ale that’s meant to quench the fiercest thirst.  Surrounded by a sea that both soothes the soul & terrifies the bravest heart, Ireland is overflowing with stories & legends. ..

Here’s one of mine.

Once, it’s said, there was nothing…

then the great & powerful Father spirit made Earth. He was so proud of his astonishing creation, he gave Earth to Mother Nature for safekeeping. She treasured Earth, but it was before human feet pressed the soil, before they breathed the clear air, & Mother Nature grew lonely.

Being a loving & resourceful Mother, she decided to create children, for company, but also to help with the tending of Earth. She started one sweet spring morning just as the dew was drying the grasses in the hills of Ireland. Wanting some company with an eye for fun, she created lively, small creatures with melodies in their hearts & mischief in their eyes. Made green, (which might have been an error as it was her first try) they reflected the hills & valleys they journeyed through with their new mother. She called them Leprechauns & gave them forevermore to the splendid green isle.

So pleased was she with her first children, that she continued creating as she traveled. She made faeries to see to the animals, & elves to watch over the rocks & mountains. She created wood nymphs & sea sprites to dwell in the forests & waters. She fashioned unicorns, & gnomes, & pookas on a lark. Some would say pookas were a mistake.

Charging them with caring for Earth, she scattered them to Earth’s corners & wished them well. They all shared the joy of loving one another & Earth, & so, all was well. Mother Nature herself, continued to spend her time traveling, near & far, just to keep her hand in & give a bit of advice now & again.

One great & glorious traveling day, she happened upon a lake so fair & bright, so blue & clear, she could only sit & stare at the wonder of it as the sunlight danced over the waves & the waves rushed up to tickle her feet. Sunlight shattered into diamonds glistening over the surface & that night she watched the moonlight glide its way along a silver path.

And sure, didn’t she fall in love with this lake?

The crystal blue waters became one of Mother Nature’s favorite places on Earth. Now each year she invites of her children to join her for their annual holiday. Sharing stories & songs, trading tales & triumphs, lingering in laughter & love, they celebrate with their passion for all on Earth.

And isn’t this a fine place to end the tale?

Whether you’re Irish or not…

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

Here’s a toast if you’re after a pint or two to celebrate…

“Here’s to me, and here’s to you. And here’s to love and laughter. I’ll be true as long as you. And not one moment after.”

Torch Lake Irish

I love that once a year everyone gets to be a little bit Irish…

images5EEBYTDL

I’m a little bit Irish so I think St. Patrick’s Day is a fine idea.  In reality, every nationality should get their own day, to educate, to remember, & to celebrate, but since I’m not in charge of that decision, I’m focusing my efforts on helping everyone enjoy March 17th.

Here are 6 ways to make your St. Patrick’s Day delightful!!!

1. Whether you are Irish or not, wear something green – remember when you were in elementary school & everyone wore green because rumor had it you could get pinched if you didn’t? Green is also a remarkably uplifting color, guaranteed to put some zing into your day…go wild, think emerald, avocado, forest, lime, moss…whatever shade speaks to you.

2.  Sing – take a deep breath, open wide, & let the music flow.  It doesn’t have to be an Irish ballad, it doesn’t have to be on pitch, it doesn’t even have to be in public. (I myself am a dedicated shower singer/songwriter) Just sing to celebrate the fact that you’re alive & can.

3.  Kiss someone – The Irish seem very fond of kissing the Blarney Stone but I think that could be over-rated. Find a willing soul (preferably someone you already know) & plant a great loud smacking smooch on them. Accompany it with a lovely strong hug & it will do you both great good! You may even want to do this more than once as it can be addicting.

4.  Eat a potato – Full of vitamins, potassium…a great comfort food…mashed, fried, baked, scalloped, butter, sour cream, salt…what’s not to like?

5.  Turn your food green – Like in Green Eggs & Ham. Be creative, you can use green food coloring in more ways than you ever imagined if you only turn your thoughts to it. OJ? mashed potatoes? milk? whatever comes to mind.  If you get stuck just find a 6 year old, they’ll give you all kinds of ideas!

6. Call a friend & tell them an Irish joke or riddle – This works on a couple of levels. It gives you the chance to catch up with someone you may not have spoken to for a bit & you get a chance to laugh together. You can Google Irish jokes & come up with hundreds or you can use the one below:

Do you know why would you never iron a four-leaf clover?

Because you shouldn’t press your luck!

Any day’s a good day to be Irish, or French, Swedish, Ugandan or any other nationality for that matter, but Monday will be a fine time to practice celebrating!

Me…I’m off to find someone to hug!!!
