Two Days & Counting….

School may be out & the temperatures may be rising…

but summer doesn’t officially start until Friday. The 2013 Summer Solstice will occur at 1:04 Friday morning when our sun will reach the northernmost point in its journey away from the equator. We could talk about all the scientific facts that surround this yearly phenomenon but I think its more important to plan your Solstice Celebration.

Here are some suggestions for making your Solstice perfect:

1. Get up!!! Set the alarm & get out there & watch the sun rise. In case you’re wondering, the sun will rise at 5:55 Friday.

2. Do something outside. As long as you’re up & about, you may as well be active.  That could mean an early morning walk (I can personally recommend Grass River Natural Area, Glacial Hills Trails, or the Skegemogg/Barker Creek rail trail), or it may mean a kayak paddle on your favorite lake.

3. Eat a yummy breakfast. What do you love?  Eggs Benedict? Pancakes with crisp bacon? Yogurt & fresh strawberries? Make it yourself or jump in the car & hit your favorite spot.

4. Spend some time Summer Reading…after all, it’s officially summer, so grab a good book, pick out a comfortable spot & settle in for a bit of a read.

5. Since you were up so early & you’re now in a comfortable position with your book, this would be the perfect time for a short nap.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you see fit, but the perfect Summer Solstice has to end with a sunset & a bonfire. For thousands of years civilizations & cultures all over the world have used the glow of a sunset & the heat of a fire to celebrate the arrival of summer. Sunset Friday will be at 9:25 which means you can light the fire at 9:30 & enjoy the night sky. The moon will be nearly full (Sunday is the full moon). The full moon in June is known as the Strawberry Moon because the Algonquins used it to predict when the strawberries would be ripe. I don’t think the Algonquins or the ancients had s’mores but I’m pretty sure they should be part of your plan.

Last thing… you need to make sure you’re with only your closest friends at the bonfire because the very last element of the Solstice Celebration involves dancing with wild abandonment around the fire!

Whatever you choose to do with your Summer Solstice Celebration, I hope it brings you great joy & a whole raft of summer fun!

Happy Fathers Day!

I’ve been without my dad for more than half of my life…

He died when I was in college but I only have to look as far as the end of the dock to remember some of the great things he gave me. He was an “all-or-nothing” kind of father.

When I was 4, he carried me to the end of the dock, said, “You’re going to swim today”, & threw me into the lake. When I came up he calmly told me to swim back to the dock…so I did. That was the beginning of my love affair with the water.

Years later I even taught some swimming myself…

When I was 5, he crafted a sort of water toboggan out of plywood, painted it maroon (I have no idea where that color came from!) & towed me around Morrison Lake behind a shiny green aluminum fishing boat powered by a 15 horse Evinrude.  The following summer he replaced the toboggan with short red water skis & a larger red & white boat with a 75 horse Johnson!

The summer I was 7, he decided I should be skiing on one ski. After what must surely have been 1000 failed attempts at “dropping” a ski, he simply refused to give me the second ski & insisted that I just deep water start on one. It worked. As a result I spent hundreds of early summer mornings “skiing the glass”.  How I wish I had a picture of that to show you! Nothing before or since equals that perfect combination of speed, strength, & grace. I hope everyone finds that at some point in their lives. The picture below is NOT me but I could do it once upon a time…I found this guy at http://www.waterskimag.com.

wpid-125-sunsetCool huh???

My 8th summer found me on top of a small red & white Sunfish sailboat. The echo I hear in my head is of my dad yelling at me to tighten the rope even as we tipped past the point of no return & got dumped into the lake, again. The result of that lesson was countless years racing an 18 foot Tequila Sunrise Hobie Cat named Cheap Thrills.

There are so many things my dad didn’t get to do…see me graduate from college, walk me down the aisle, share my teaching career, but when I think of how many ways I”ve always enjoyed life on the water, I know I’m one lucky girl.

So to all the fathers everywhere, to all the mothers who are fathers, all the grandparents, aunts & uncles & friends who sometimes fill that role, you need to know that you are having a huge impact on a child’s life…& you are one lucky person!

Enjoy your day!

Me…I’m off to spend some time on the water…

The Gardens of Torch Lake

Gardeners in Northern Michigan are insane…

DSCN0819

Think about it. We wait all those long winter months, endlessly thumbing through garden catalogs, carefully starting seeds in tiny pots in the kitchen, systematically crossing off the days on the calendar. Then at the first sign of spring we frantically plunge into the garden, cleaning, raking, hoeing, weeding, amending, planning, mulching & hoping the warmth lasts.

No doubt about it…crazy anyway you look at it!

Unless you look at it this way…
